What is a subluxation?

You may have heard of the term subluxation from your chiropractor or a friend undergoing chiropractic treatment, but what exactly is a subluxation? The term subluxation comes from the Latin words sub, meaning "less than", and luxation, meaning "dislocation". A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of the bones and tissues in your spinal column. In chiropractic medicine, Subluxations are believed to be the cause of many symptoms such as neck and back pain, headaches, and reduced ability to move.

How are subluxations caused?

Your spinal column is one of the most important structures in your body. It runs from the base of your skull down to your lower back and serves to protect the nerves that control every part of your body. Subluxations occur when the bones and tissue in the spine become misaligned from their natural positions, putting pressure on these nerves. Misalignment and pressure can cause an array of symptoms from mild discomfort and headaches to reduced range of motion and sometimes even debilitating pain.

Subluxations can be triggered by a wide range of factors, from slips and falls, sports injuries, and automobile accidents to stress and poor posture. Your chiropractor at Pain Care Associates will work with you one-on-one to determine the cause of your back pain. Your chiropractor will ask questions about the possible causes of your discomfort and perform a thorough exam of your neck and spine in order to develop an effective treatment plan.

How can my chiropractor help relieve my pain?

At Pain Care Associates, we know that each patient's situation requires unique treatment. We strive to provide the best pain relief for our patients through an individualized approach that can include chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, and massage therapy. Our goal is to provide the pain relief you need to get back to living a healthy, pain free life.

If your chiropractor discovers that vertebral subluxations are at the root of your pain, they will perform spinal adjustments and decompression designed to ease pressure in your spine, gently adjusting your spinal column back to its natural position. Your chiropractor may use a variety of techniques to perform the adjustment including manual adjustments, electro-stimulation, and ultrasound treatment. We also offer state-of-the-art treatment with our ProAdjuster system. The ProAdjuster system can pinpoint the location of subluxations and use gentle, effective pressure to relieve pressure on the nerves and stimulate your body's natural healing mechanisms. Many patients experience some relief from pain immediately during treatment that may last hours or days after the initial visit. Your chiropractor will determine the necessary schedule of treatment to best help your body adjust back to its optimal condition and keep you healthy and happy.
